Program Note: "presence of the absence of the presence" is made of puzzle-pieces that don't quite fit together. Homorhythmic flurries of pitches that are a bit too dense for their own good, persistent sonorities, and single-minded harmonics each proceed on their respective trajectories and interact in different ways. Various manifestations of sustain and resonance blur the boundaries between each material
Certain materials of the piece, as well as the title, have their origins in previous unfulfilled projects of mine. Each forged new existences here, in the presence of antithetical puzzle-pieces.
This piece was composed for Ian Pace in spring 2023.
