CHAMBER WORKS

Not buried, but just under the surface

Instrumentation:

(b clr, t sax) (10’)

Program Note:

For Garden Unit

I have recently become obsessed with fragments and nonlinear growth, both in and out of music. Drawings that extend beyond the frame, ‘shadow pieces’ that begin after the last measure of a work, and the branching growth and communication of mycelium all were on my mind while composing this piece. Not buried, but just under the surface is complete in itself yet remains a fragment. The abstract and the unspoken hint at more beyond themselves. This piece was composed for Garden Unit, and shares its name with a painting by Caroline Kent
